A TEENAGER from Chester suffered serious head injuries after a gang attacked him with metal bars and bottles in an early morning brawl.

The 19-year-old remains in a stable condition in hospital following the attack in Smallbrook Gardens, Whitchurch.

Richard Ewels, media manager for the Shropshire division of West Mercia Police, said: "Police received a call from a member of the pu
blic at about 2.20am on Saturday reporting some fighting in Smallbrook Road, Whitchurch.

"Police attended and found a 19-year-old man from Chester unconscious in a nearby garden."

Mr Ewels said the victim was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and was later transferred to the high dependency unit of the University of North Staffordshire Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent.

He added: "Six youths were arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and they were taken into custody.

"They were released on bail pending further inquiries."

Insp Nigel Humphries, of West Mercia Police, said a large team of detectives were investigating the attack and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

On Saturday Insp Humphries said: "A large number of officers from CID are investigating the attack. A man suffered serious head injuries and was transferred to the neuro unit in Stoke.

"A group of about six people were reported with bottles and metals bars and fighting in the street.

"We would appeal for any witnesses or anybody with any information to contact police immediately."

West Midlands Ambulance Service got the call to Smallbrook Road at 2.35am on Saturday from West Mercia Police.

An ambulance spokesman said: "An ambulance was sent to the scene.

"A man was treated for a head injury before being taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

Anyone with information should call police on 08457 444 888 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
