NEARLY 40,000 punters descended on Chester racecourse over the weekend, as the new 'Midsummer Madness' race meetings were declared a massive hit.
The Roodee was packed to the rafters on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, as revellers enjoyed the sunshine and champagne.

Among the stars to make an appearance was footballer Michael Owen.

Organisers say more than 11,000 people attended the Friday meeting, with a "phenomenal" 27,100 packing into the Roodee on Saturday – an 11 per cent increase on last year.

Richard Thomas, chief executive of Chester Racecourse, said: "We couldn't be happier about the response to the Midsummer Madness meetings – the crowd on Friday were on great form and really got behind the racing.

"Saturday was superb with record numbers and some really exciting racing all day."
