SIMON DAVIES today rued the error of Chester's ways.
The Blues boss saw his relegation-threatened side move to within touching distance of the drop zone after suffering a 1-0 defeat at high-flying Wycombe Wanderers.

City are just two points above the relegation places occupied by Mansfield Town and Wrexham who both won their weekend games.

Chester now desperately need to pocket a victory to secure their Football League status, starting at Shrewsbury Town this Saturday, one of three remaining league games.

Davies said: "I've spoken to a few of our more experienced players who admitted they'd rather play terrible right now and get the points.

"At the moment I feel we're playing really well and not getting anything, but were just hoping what goes around will come around.

"Wycombe have had one or two chances and scored one because they have someone who has scored 26 goals in the league, and we had a chance from two yards with just the keeper to beat – but it's harsh for me to have a pop at Kevin Roberts because he got himself in that position.

"I told the players after Saturday's match that I wish I could have released some of my frustration in terms of a so-called good telling off, because I know the players did ever so well against Wycombe.

"There was nothing in the game against Wycombe. We had a couple of chances each, and yet we came away with nothing.

"At this stage of the season with other clubs playing and gaining a point or two, the points side is worrying, but the performance side of our game isn't so much.

"I felt we frustrated Wycombe by playing a tighter midfield because of Kevin Ellison and Richie Partridge being unavailable. We knew they were going to put some crosses in, but I was confident that our back four could defend it."

Davies praised Wycombe marksman Scott McGleish who bagged his 26th goal of the season in the victory against the Blues.

He added: "It's normally a top striker at the moment that is putting the ball in our net, so we could have done with Scott McGleish not being on form against us.

"But McGleish showed us why he is a sought-after striker.

"It was the second ball that caught us out, but with younger players they sometimes see things a little too late. It's a learning curve and I hope we can learn from that.

"But it's hard at the moment to say we'll learn from it because we're now in a situation where we're looking over our shoulder.

"I just feel that if we can play as well as we did at Wycombe when we face Shrewsbury on Saturday then we shouldn't have a lot to worry about.""

- Tickets remain on sale from the Deva Stadium this week for Chester's away game against Shrewsbury Town.

The match which is at The New Meadow takes place on Saturday, April 26 (kick-off 3pm), and is all ticket. The Deva Stadium ticket office will be open from 10am to 4pm throughout the week. No tickets will be sold on match day.
