Davies prepared to wait for a new shot stopper

SIMON DAVIES today insisted he was in no rush to find a second goalkeeper.
The Chester City boss currently has John Danby as the club's only recognised first team shot-stopper after reserve team keeper Phil Palethorpe was released by the club at the end of last season.

But Davies believes he can sign a keeper before the start of the Blues' league campaign which kicks off at Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday, August 9.

He said: "I know I need another goalkeeper, but I'm in no major rush to bring anybody in at the moment.

"There are plenty of names that I have been recommended and I'll have a look at a few of them and bring them into the club before the season starts.

"But there is no immediate rush to find another keeper.

"I've already had a look at some of our apprentice goalkeepers in training and I'm aware that I need someone to act as a back-up for John Danby.

"I know that it could become a delicate situation, but if we turn to the bigger clubs in a bid to sign a keeper in a loan deal I couldn't guarantee that keeper any minutes in a match."

Davies emphasised the ability of his number one, John Danby, who was Chester's only ever-present last season, and who produced a series of breathtaking saves to help his side escape the threat of relegation.

Davies added: "In my opinion John Danby is the best goalkeeper in our division and he demonstrated that to me last season with a number of fabulous saves.

"He never showed a lack of form and he kept himself injury-free and I was very pleased with his performances."

Danby kept experienced player-coach, Gavin Ward, on the sidelines during the first half of last season before Ward left the Blues to join cross-border rivals Wrexham.

And the pair trained alongside former Tranmere Rovers keeper, Palethorpe.

Davies said: "Phil Palethorpe was a great lad, but he agreed with me that he needed first team football.

"He was a regular in our reserve team last season, but he was never going to displace John Danby in our first team, unless John picked up an injury.

"People may ask me why I released Phil Palethorpe, but I don't regret my decision to let him go because I wanted to see him secure first team football for himself and progress.

"I know I'll need a goalkeeper on the substitute's bench and I'm going to address the situation within the next few weeks by looking at trialists because my desk is full of pieces of paper with names on.

"I now think I've got a decent squad of players and I'm pleased that I've been able to build at my own pace because we were never going to get into a bidding war for anyone."

- Chester City have announced their ticket sales arrangements for the League Cup First Round visit of Leeds United next month.

The club's official website has announced that tickets go on sale to season ticket holders tomorrow (Friday), from 10am until 7pm at the Deva Stadium ticket office.

The statement continues advising season ticket holders to bring with them their receipt from the season ticket purchase, or identification which will be checked at the ticket office.

As usual for big games at the Deva Stadium, West Stand season ticket holders can expect to be relocated to the East for this fixture.

Any remaining unsold tickets will go on sale to the general public next week.
