Davies determined to keep Chester up
SIMON DAVIES today underlined his determination to retain Chester City's Football League status.
Davies revealed he was delighted to receive a new two-year contract by the club as he focused his sights on Saturday's league match at Shrewsbury.
He said: "It was good news that I received a new two-year contract as team manager.
"But I think it's all about stability now because everything was up in the air and everybody at the club wondered what was going to happen.
"Now we know I'm in charge for our last three games and beyond, so we can start first and foremost to make sure that we're in the right division by winning our match at Shrewsbury on Saturday.
"When we get the right result at Shrewsbury we can then go into our last two games by planning for next season.
"Stephen Vaughan and the club staff have been fantastic with the support they have shown to me. They have backed me all the way since I was originally appointed."
The Blues boss has been appointed the City manager on a two-year contract with three matches of the current season remaining, and one win needed to cement the club's safety.
Davies joined the club as a youth coach and proved a hit as he continued to improve the youth programme at the club, and he agreed to take charge of the first team as caretaker manager after the dismissal of Bobby Williamson at the beginning of March.
Davies is aware of Chester's precarious league position ahead of this weekend's trip to Shrewsbury.
City are currently just two points above the relegation zone after their 1-0 defeat last weekend at promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers.
Chester have taken just four points from a possible 27 since Williamson's departure, Davies having so far failed to halt the post-Christmas slide that has seen City win just twice in 23 games, picking up a just nine points out of a possible 69.
Davies has earned just one win (at home to Darlington over Easter) and a draw (at Hereford) from his nine games at the helm.
But he is confident he has a squad of players who are capable of securing their safety in League Two.
Having played at the highest level, he provides Chester with lots of knowledge of the game and a clear understanding of what it takes in League Two.
He said: "Our future is in our hands and, if we continue to play the way we have, things will come right."
- Chester City reserves suffered a 7-1 home defeat against Rochdale reserves in their final Pontin's League game of the season.
Rochdale first teamer Chris Dagnall continued his rehabilitation from injury with a hat-trick as a very strong Rochdale side comprehensively beat City.
Dagnall opened the scoring after 33 minutes as he raced on to a Will Buckley flick and calmly beat the keeper in a one-on-one.
Chris Basham and Dagnall both scored within five minutes of the restart and though Chester managed to pull a goal back, a Buckley brace on 73 and 76 minutes was added to by Joe Thompson on 84 minutes before Dagnall completed the rout on 86 minutes.
