Calum McIntyre believes Chester’s new management duo represents an ‘exciting appointment’ for the football club.

Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson were installed joint-managers earlier this week and academy head coach McIntyre revealed Morley rang him en route to Walsall to wish the youth team the best of luck ahead of their National League Under-19 Cup final tie which they won 3-0 against FC Halifax Town.

"I had a phone call from Bernard Morley on our way down, a touch of class," he said.

"It's an exciting appointment for the football club but I want tonight to be about these boys. I've celebrated there because it means the absolute world to me.

"You've felt it, these past 12 months, you've been unbelievable in the press, the way you've reported on it, you've had to watch every defeat on a Saturday, had to report on every bit of news, but you've done it in the right way.

"There's now a chance to galvanise this football club and it starts with this youth team.

"I've seen Matty Waters score at Gateshead, I've seen Tom Crawford score the winner at Barrow, James Jones come into the first-team and called into England C, Cain Noble scoring on his debut.

"This ends a difficult 12 months. For a football club with our resources to do that, is unbelievable and I hope they celebrate it properly.

"I'm going straight to Laurence Kirby and he will buy the Smarties and the Fruit-Shoots for the bus home."

McIntyre, who took charge of the first-team for the final three matches of the season, praised his players and backroom staff for their efforts in recent months after victory at the Bescot Stadium.

“I intend to enjoy it, I really do,” he added.

“What we’ve managed to achieve is to punch above our weight. It doesn’t happen without my backroom staff, everyone who has shown me their loyalty in the most challenging of seasons, I can’t actually demonstrate how much gratitude I owe them.

“Remember them, remember the players’ names because they made history. We’re all in it together. We have another cup final on Sunday and then bring on the cricket season!”
