Anthony Johnson says he and Bernard Morley have been ‘stunned and humbled’ by the response of Chester’s supporters since their appointment.

The duo were installed as joint-managers just over three weeks ago and met with sections of the club’s fanbase at a City Fans United meeting held on Tuesday night at the Swansway Chester Stadium.

Johnson, 35, admitted the pair were surprised by the numbers of supporters who came out and believes the new season in National League North represents a ‘clean slate’ for everyone connected with the Blues.

“We were stunned by the response,” he said. “At our first club we had crowds of 150 on a matchday. We walked in on Tuesday night and there’s a crowd of 150 for a meet and greet before pre-season. It’s very humbling.

“I feel like it went well. There was talk and discussion about last season and I think it was a chance for the supporters to draw a line under all of that and look forward now. It’s a clean slate for everyone at the club.

“We’re both positive people naturally and I hope that came across. We know what we want to do here to put things right and I think we’ve made a good start in doing that.

“The board also addressed some questions regarding moving forward and I think it was very positive on the whole.”

Johnson and Morley have been revamping Chester’s squad in the past 10 days, bringing in new signings Matty Hughes, Grant Shenton, Steve Howson and Dominic Smalley, with the promise of further additions over the coming days.

“We were delighted to get Steve and Grant through the door last weekend and I’m hoping there’s more to come,” he said.

“Steve is an experienced campaigner who we trust and who we can work with. He’s hugely important for what we want to do. I’m really happy to get them on board and it shows the supporters the type of lads we’re trying to bring in.

“We said we wouldn’t rush into signings and I think the calibre of player we’re able to bring in is proof that we’re going about it the right way.

“Chester is an attractive place to play in non-league, we’re finding lads are interested because it’s Chester.”
