Chester are ready to expand their search for a new manager if an agreement cannot be finalised with their preferred candidate.

The Blues have indicated they have made their best offer to their prospective boss, but discussions over finances and next season’s on and off field budget are understood to have led to talks dragging on longer than either party would have originally wanted, with Chester having initially hoped to make an appointment earlier this week.

The City Fans United (CFU) board are now understood to be willing to expand their search for more candidates if an agreement with their chosen man can’t be finalised within 48 hours.

Former Leeds United and Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn remains favourite to land the job, while ex-Mansfield boss Adam Murray has also been heavily linked with the role.

Chester’s retained list is set to be submitted in the coming days with the club wanting a new manager in place to begin a crucial period of recruitment which is set to result in a significant overhaul of the playing squad on a reduced budget, set to be in the region of £250,000 but with significant liabilities from the current first-team squad on two-year deals.
